The Two Gods Most Associated With Childbirth And Happy Households Were Enough To Give A Kid Nightmares!
Tawaret is a goddess whose primary function was as protector of mother and child during childbirth. And, though her image was often used on hand mirrors and cosmetic accessories, this goddess was no beauty. This goddess was usually depicted as a hippopotamus standing upright with human arms, legs and a woman’s pendulous breasts. The other odd god of the household was Bes. Women in labor would call out to this squat grotesque little, pot-bellied god. In fairness to the ancients, it’s likely that these gods were thought scare of bad spirits.
Who’s a Bird-Brain?
The god of writing is an Ibis-headed entity – Thoth. That’s right, a bird-headed god was believed to have created the literary arts. And when this patron of scribes isn’t depicted as an ibis, he’s shown as a baboon with a pen in its hand.
“The Mummy” of Movie Fame was Actually a Brain Surgeon
Imhotep may have been portrayed as a villainous priest and a terrifying mummy in the movies, but the only human to be deified in ancient Egypt was a physician. Imhotep was the first man to have performed successful brain surgery and was, centuries after his death, was proclaimed god of medicine. Imhotep was an advisor and physician to King Djoser, as well as he was credited with the design of Djoser's Step Pyramid, Egypt’s first pyramid. And there is skeletal evidence that suggests that the doctor conducted innercranial procedures on pyramid workers.
